  • Organized two block parties
  • Began research for a historic tour brochure
  • Encouraged retailers to advertise together through the Merchant Marketing Package
  • Attended regularly scheduled radio appearances on WANI, Mix, and Kicker
  • Increased newspaper coverage of events
  • Started a student involvement program, including window painting by OHS clubs
  • Created a website (www.opelikamainst.org)
  • Created a new merchant brochure

Design Committee Chair: Suzanne Fields

  • Established guidelines for façade grant program
  • Developed application and process for applying for façade grants
  • Worked with city on next phase of streetscape plan
  • Encouraged property owners to contact Tom Kaufman at the Alabama Historical Commission and/or Suzanne Fields at Fields Company Architects for free design assistance

Economic Restructuring Committee Chair: Jenci Spradlin

  • Developed a new loan pool program
  • Developed a relationship with city planning, zoning, and fire officials to troubleshoot potential areas of concern
  • Explored construction of public facilities in downtown, alleviating the need for each small business to construct an ADA accessible bathroom in their store
  • Established a loan pool program
  • Prepared information on state and local tax credits
  • Developed a local incentive program including utility deposit abatements
  • Worked with city on One-Stop permitting process
  • Explored area contractors who specialize in asbestos removal to get a better rate for several buildings done at the same time
